Alkalis and acids can be neutralized to great and varied effect. For example, it is neutralization reactions that help us breathe underwater or cure indigestion.
- A neutral solution is pH 7
- Sodium bicarbonate is an alkali that can neutralize stomach acid
- In every neutralization reaction an acid and base combine to form a salt and water
- Scuba divers use neutralization reactions to allow them to stay underwater for longer
When an acid and a base combine together, an important chemical reaction can occur.
If the right amount of acid with the correct pH is mixed with the right amount of base, the acid and base react together to produce a solution that is neutral.
